Training
in fire safety

More than a regulatory requirement, training your staff in fire safety is essential to increase their autonomy and safety in the event of a fire.

Training your staff in fire safety means ensuring the safety of your buildings
and people

Is fire safety training compulsory?

All employees must be informed and trained

According to the French Labour Code, every company, regardless of its sector of activity, must train all its staff in raising the alarm, using first aid resources (fire extinguishers), making their workstations safe and evacuating the premises.

Specific training for certain public building systems and plants

Certain sectors of activity are subject to a special legal regime regarding training. This concerns:

  • Health establishments (hospitals, clinics, nursing homes…) (put link to SECTOR page) which accommodate a vulnerable public, with reduced mobility;
  • Education and early childhood establishments (nurseries, schools, colleges, high schools, etc.) (put link to SECTOR page) that welcomes a young audience;
  • Accommodation establishments (hotels, inns, etc.) (put link to SECTOR page) that accommodate the public overnight;
  • Establishments known as Installations Classified for Environmental Protection (ICPE) such as factories (put link to industry SECTOR page) in which hazardous substances are handled.

In these establishments, certain workers must be specially designated by the employer to receive training in:

  • the implementation of complex fire-fighting equipment;
  • Make certain facilities safe (power cuts, gas storage, etc.).
  • Supervise the evacuation or bring workers and occupants to safety.

Insurance training requirements

This compulsory training can be supplemented by the recommendations of the INRS (Natural Research and Security Institute) and the APSAD fire safety best practice guidelines. These training courses are not compulsory, but they are often a condition of signing insurance contracts covering fire risks in companies.

Four themed fire safety training courses

There are four levels of fire safety training, ranging from the most general, suitable for all employees, to the most technical.

  • “Safety and Health “training

    This training enables teams to become more autonomous and reactive during interventions linked mainly to fire or electrical risks, while maintaining the protection of people and property. Staff are able to carry out an evacuation, use emergency equipment and provide first aid, such as cardiac massage and the use of a defibrillator.

  • “Operations” training

    This training enables staff to operate all fire safety installations, through expert handling of their fire detection system (FDS), their fire safety system (FSS) or their operations assistance unit (OAU).

  • ”Technical training”

    More advanced and offered under certain conditions, this training enables staff to master the architecture and installation of fire safety products, in accordance with construction requirements and programming software.

  • “Regulation” training

    This training course makes it possible to design and install a fire safety system in accordance with current standards and regulations, and to understand the principles involved in ensuring safety in client establishments.
